Saint-Rémy

May 8, 1889–May 16, 1890.

In Saint-Remy, van Gogh resided in the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, where he voluntarily admitted himself for treatment of his mental health issues. Despite his fragility, he continued to paint prolifically during this time, at least when he was permitted. The beautiful landscapes and vibrant colors of the Provence region yielded irises, wheat field with cypresses, and, of course, The Starry Night.
